Description
All of these wildflowers are Firewheels (Gaillardia pulchella), photographed at various locations on the North Carolina coast. The great variety of shapes and colors of this species might have much to tell us about the evolution of asters; petals of these composite flowers might have once been individual flowers that unfolded and lost their internal parts.
