Description
This osprey was perched in a tree in what I still call "South Lido Park," even though today its formal name is "Ted Sperling Nature Park at South Lido." This Sarasota County, Florida, park is one of my favorites because of its minimal development. Birds in this place know people won't harm them, so their numbers and species abound. Black-hooded Parakeets, Snowy Egrets, Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Palm Warblers, and Laughing Gulls have showed up in this small place during my few brief visits there. The Ospreys here are regularly seen in trees and often fly out to the Gulf of Mexico to catch fish. People sometimes fish on the Sarasota Bay side, and Great Blue Herons and Brown Pelicans come close to them, hoping for handouts. Australian Pines, although officially invasive, are among my favorite trees; I love their long, jointed needles.
